Away Day to the Surrey Hills and Box Hill

Chris Cooper will lead an away-day special on Saturday 18th May. The varied and interesting route of 54 miles is almost certainly guaranteed to take you places you’ve never been before!

Leaving King’s Cross station at 10am the route is mainly on quiet roads and cycleways, via the West End, Hyde Park and Kensington; then along the Thames before heading south through Richmond Park.

There will be a refreshment break in Old Malden (choice of cafe, chip shop, sandwich bar, or local supermarket) after which there are several miles of traffic free route through attractive woodland. Some sections have unsealed surface but should be dry and in good condition during May.
After 30 miles we enter Surrey Hills AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) before joining the route of the 2012 Olympic road races, to climb Box Hill. At an average gradient of 5% it’s not the hardest climb on the route but it’s the most enjoyable, with wonderful views from the top. (It’s reported to be one of the most popular Strava segments in Europe – so not to be missed!)
The route after Box Hill is no less enjoyable, with a fast downhill section, a challenging climb and more attractive countryside. The ride ends at East Croydon from where we take a train back to St Pancras/King’s Cross.
